***I won this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. This did not influence my opinion of the book***I was really nervous for this book after the first chapter. A lot of characters were introduced and a lot of disjunct actions were happening in an unfamiliar place. I wondered if the author was strong enough to balance it all out in the end, not forget where she began, and keep all of the details consistent. Fortunately, the author is a great story manager. Phew!The book is about a young police officer who is trying to escape her past and begin anew in a familiar land. The small town is a mix of others escaping and others who are there for their entire lives. It's a remote town with much history. This really could be anywhere - it just happens to be a frozen tundra. At times, it's hard to believe that this young woman is 24. I think she should maybe be 27. But that's not important.There are some really truly gruesome scenes in this book. The author really captures what happens to bodies in the wilderness when predators are around. Squeamish readers may balk at this - it's not just blood, readers!Overall, the writing is a bit inconsistent. Some scenes are very descriptive and vibrant. Other scenes are described differently with soft wording. There is a thread of romance running through the book which is underscored and written quite "PG" until all of a sudden a more crude word is used. It's not the word that bothered me, but how it was used all of a sudden.The storytelling has nice ups and downs. There are many characters that could be the killer, and the reveal is crafted nicely. The actual climactic scene where our young heroine gets her murderer winds up being a bit anticlimactic, though probably more realistic this way. The downward closure of the novel is very sugary sweet. Almost fairytale-like.If you haven't read this author before, or if you are interested in a different type of murder mystery, I recommend checking this out. If you are at all squeamish about blood and more than blood, skip this.
